A Message From Dr. Colin Miller PT, DPT, Owner And Founder Of Optimum Physical Therapy + Performance

If you’ve just suffered a sports injury or have been suffering from one for a while, it’s tempting to dismiss it as “nothing serious” and simply “put up with it,” carrying on as best you can.

Or it’s easy to become disheartened and “stuck,” wondering if you’ll ever be able to return to sports or stay as active as you once did…

If you are experiencing this, remember that you are not alone; we see it all the time. We encounter patients in our San Francisco, California, physio clinics who have been injured while participating in sports or exercising, regardless of the season.

Traditionally, doctors and medical professionals will simply instruct patients to “rest” or stop doing something. This, in our opinion, causes greater injury while raising your chances of future injuries. This is because when we relax, our muscles atrophy and weaken! It explains why so many people who have suffered from a sports injury are perplexed:

“It’s Been Months. Why Do I Still Have an Injury That Keeps Me From Being Active and Playing My Favorite Sport?”

Most people think that if they get hurt while playing sports or exercising, they can get back to it after a few days of rest. When they try to exercise again, though, they find that they still can’t do as much as they used to. When you rest, you may feel little or no pain. But as soon as you start doing things again, the pain comes back, and resting doesn’t seem to help.

Does It Describe You?

Another scenario we encounter frequently in our Physical Therapy Clinic is when clients go to the doctor and are told to take a break, rest, wear support, and “try these painkillers” to “see how it goes.” Then, four weeks later, they go back to the same Doctor since the injury hasn’t healed, only to be offered MORE rest and ANOTHER prescription for even stronger drugs.

The problem is that complete rest is rarely the best recommendation for sports injuries including hamstring strains, ankle sprains, and a runner’s knee.

You’re probably puzzled and frustrated since you’ve been told different things by different people. You may believe you have a back condition, but it is a hip problem.

Sports injuries can be confounding because the source of the pain is frequently not the place that needs to be mended or worked on, and if you rest for too long, other parts of the body become just as, if not more, problematic!

This ambiguity about “resting” frequently leads to procrastination and postponement of deciding what to do to help heal their ailment and return to exercise. Worse, many people simply accept that “their days of being active are over,” as if this is normal or “has” to be the case.

Is That How You Feel, Too?

If You’re Currently Frustrated and Suffering From a Sports Injury, Here Are Seven More Reasons Why It May Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:

  1. You thought it would go away on its own, but it didn’t.
  2. You went to the doctor, who told you to relax, wear a brace, and take pain medications – but the medicines didn’t help, and as soon as they kicked in, you were back in misery.
  3. You simply accepted it because a family member or acquaintance told you that as people age, they become more prone to sports injuries.
  4. You have sought treatment from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physio before, but nothing they said or did seem to help.
  5. You’ve tried heating pads, ice, and sports braces, but they haven’t relieved your pain or allowed you to return to activity with ease.
  6. Because you were in a lot of pain, you thought relaxing would be a good idea, but it still irritates you daily.
  7. You chose to have a couple of “sports massages” in the hopes that they would relieve your discomfort, but all they did was make you feel a bit ‘painful’ or relaxing,’ and they did nothing to improve your injury in the long run.

If any of these things have happened to you, we’d love to help by inviting you to schedule a call with one of our physical therapists to find out what we can do to help. It’s a GOOD THING that you’ve tried any or all of these things since knowing what doesn’t work takes you closer to discovering what does!

If you want to get some serious guidance over the phone, book a call with us by clicking the link below. The phone call is free, and there is no commitment to schedule appointments with us following the conversation. Our goal is to help you make the best decision possible about what to do next.

So, here are four options for you:
  1. The first step is to decide whether or not to get help; many people put off seeking help for far too long, hoping that the suffering will simply fade away with time. They’re still putting up with it six months later, and nothing has changed. Or it gets worse, and they stop participating in sports or exercise entirely.
  2. Next, do the RIGHT exercises – one of the best ways to help you recover quickly and safely from an injury is to do the right series of progressed exercises – the right exercises given to you by a Physical Therapist will help reduce pain, allow you to move freely, and return to sports quickly – and ensure that the problems do not reoccur anytime soon.
  3. Avoid “too much rest” – While relaxation is necessary for recovery, taking too much rest will not help you recover faster. Many people feel that complete abstinence from an activity is required for rehabilitation. However, blood flow is essential for an injury to heal, which rest prohibits. It would be incredibly advantageous if you were given suitable rehabilitation and strengthening exercises, as well as hands-on treatment, to assist you in returning to an active and healthy lifestyle as soon as possible.
  4. Real, “hands-on” Physical Therapy – Physical Therapy has been proven to benefit those who have experienced sporting injuries.
